Where moisture becomes a quality, energy or capacity problem.

Across food, fermentation, feed, pharma, biotech, chemicals, pigments, biomass, sludge, recycling and advanced-material processing, excess or inconsistent moisture can affect specification, energy use, throughput, storage, transport and process stability.

Food / Grain

Final moisture must be repeatable without compromising product quality.

Food, grain, potato and starch products can be sensitive to overheating, colour, texture, hygiene and residence time.

Drying objective: achieve stable final moisture with controlled temperature, airflow and residence time.
Brewing / Fermentation

Wet fermentation co-products can become a storage bottleneck.

Brewer's spent grain, yeast and fermentation solids can contain substantial water and deteriorate quickly without stabilization.

Drying objective: reduce moisture around the intended feed, ingredient, energy or recovery route.
Pharma / Biotech

Sensitive materials need narrow thermal and moisture control.

APIs, intermediates, enzymes and biological materials may require controlled temperature, containment and validated final moisture.

Drying objective: define the drying basis around sensitivity, containment, residence time and final specification.
Chemical / Pigment

Residual moisture can cause caking, instability or off-spec product.

Salts, crystals, pigments and intermediates can also introduce corrosion, solvent, dust or explosion-risk considerations.

Drying objective: match the dryer to material behaviour, temperature limits, construction materials and hazard profile.
Biomass / Wood

Variable moisture lowers fuel value and densification performance.

Wood and biomass can vary in moisture, particle size and bulk density before pelletizing, storage or combustion.

Drying objective: deliver stable moisture and predictable downstream performance.
Sewage / Industrial Sludge

Wet solids carry excess mass and disposal burden.

Sewage and industrial sludge may require substantial evaporation before transport, disposal, thermal use or material recovery.

Drying objective: reduce water mass and stabilize solids around the intended downstream route.
Recycling / RDF

Moisture can reduce fuel quality and material-recovery efficiency.

Recovered fibres, RDF/SRF and wet recycling fractions may require drying before storage, densification or thermal utilization.

Drying objective: stabilize moisture for predictable handling, storage and downstream use.
Germany / EU Conformity

Late conformity decisions can force redesign.

Machinery, electrical, EMC, ATEX, pressure-equipment, gas and food-contact requirements can affect component selection, risk assessment, technical documentation, instructions and CE conformity.

Drying objective: identify the applicable German/EU requirements during project engineering rather than after shipment.

Prove the drying basis before committing to the machine.

01

Dried & Tested pilot validation

Representative material can be trialed to establish drying behaviour, target moisture, residence time and a practical scale-up basis before final equipment selection.

02

Material-first dryer selection

Band, paddle, rotary, fluid-bed, tray and other dryer types are considered according to the material rather than forcing every application into one machine.

03

Energy-conscious process design

Airflow, heat input, recirculation and residence time are engineered around evaporation load and available plant utilities.

04

Continuous industrial throughput

Systems can be configured for continuous production where batch drying creates labour, consistency or capacity limitations.

05

Integration with the German plant process

Feeding, dewatering, conveying, drying, cooling, screening, controls and downstream interfaces can be evaluated as one process.

06

Germany / EU conformity planning

Applicable machinery, electrical, EMC, ATEX, pressure-equipment, gas and food-contact requirements can be reviewed during engineering so the conformity route is defined before shipment.

From moisture problem to a validated drying basis.

Before equipment size and commercial scope are fixed, we establish what must be evaporated, how the material behaves, what utilities are available, what the dried product must achieve and which German/EU technical requirements need to be considered.

01 / APPLICATION DATA

Define the German plant requirement

Material, feed rate, inlet moisture, target moisture, operating hours, temperature limits, utilities and downstream objective.

02 / DRIED & TESTED

Pilot Trial

Where appropriate, test representative material to validate drying behaviour and practical operating conditions before scale-up.

03 / PROCESS ENGINEERING

System Design

Develop evaporation load, residence time, airflow, heating, material movement, controls and equipment configuration.

Industrial dryer questions German plants ask before they buy.

These are the process, engineering, safety, conformity, operations and procurement points typically established before selecting an industrial dryer for Germany.

What Germany industries can GEM Drytech support with industrial drying systems?

We work across food and ingredients, dairy, potato and starch, grain, brewing, animal feed, pet food and aquafeed, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology, enzymes, specialty chemicals, pigments, biomass, pulp and paper, sludge, recycling, fertilizer, minerals, ceramics and advanced materials.

Can GEM Drytech test our material before we invest in a full-scale dryer?

Yes. Through the Dried & Tested pilot program, representative material can be evaluated to establish drying behaviour, operating conditions and a practical design basis before final equipment selection.

Can the dryer be designed around our required final moisture and production rate?

Yes. Dryer configuration is developed around feed moisture, target final moisture, throughput, thermal sensitivity, particle characteristics, utilities, hygiene or containment needs and downstream process requirements.

Which machinery rules apply to an industrial dryer placed on the German market in 2026?

As of September 2026, Germany continues to apply the EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC through the Machinery Ordinance (9. ProdSV) for machinery placed on the market up to 19 January 2027. Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 on machinery applies from 20 January 2027, supported in Germany by the Machinery Regulation Implementation Act (MaschinenDG).

Does an industrial dryer for Germany require CE marking?

Where the complete machine falls within applicable EU product legislation, the manufacturer must complete the relevant conformity-assessment procedure, prepare the required technical documentation and declaration, and affix CE marking where required. Under the current 9. ProdSV machinery framework, CE marking is required for machinery covered by that regulation.

What language should the machinery documentation use in Germany?

Documentation language should be established for the applicable legal regime and product scope. Under Germany's Machinery Regulation Implementation Act for Regulation (EU) 2023/1230, operating instructions, safety information and EU declarations for machinery are required in German from the regulation's application date. German-language operating and safety documentation should therefore be planned as part of the project.

What electrical requirements should be considered for Germany?

Electrical equipment within the relevant voltage scope can fall under Directive 2014/35/EU, implemented in Germany through the Electrical Equipment Ordinance (1. ProdSV). Machinery electrical design should also be coordinated with the machine's overall conformity assessment, component scope, supply voltage, protection, grounding and applicable technical standards.

What EMC requirements apply to industrial dryer controls and drives?

Germany's Electromagnetic Compatibility Act (EMVG) implements Directive 2014/30/EU. PLCs, VFDs, motors, control cabinets, cabling and instrumentation should therefore be designed and integrated so the applicable electromagnetic-compatibility requirements are met.

What applies if combustible dust, solvent vapour or gas can create an explosive atmosphere?

Equipment and protective systems intended for potentially explosive atmospheres can fall under Directive 2014/34/EU, implemented in Germany through the Explosion Protection Products Ordinance (11. ProdSV). Workplace explosion risks also need to be addressed under the operating-safety and hazardous-substances framework. Dust properties, solvents, zone classification, ignition sources, surface temperatures and required equipment categories should be defined for the specific installation.

What applies if the dryer package includes pressure equipment?

Pressure equipment and assemblies within the relevant scope are regulated in Germany through the Pressure Equipment Ordinance (14. ProdSV), which implements Directive 2014/68/EU. Classification and conformity assessment depend on fluid, pressure, volume or nominal size and equipment category. German operating and inspection obligations should also be checked for the installed equipment.

What applies to gas-fired dryers or burner systems?

Where a gas appliance or fitting falls within scope, Regulation (EU) 2016/426 can apply. Germany supplements this framework through the Gas Appliances Implementation Act (GasgeräteDG). Burner, gas-train, appliance and site-gas responsibilities should be defined during engineering because not every complete industrial dryer follows one identical gas-appliance conformity route.

What German workplace-safety requirements should be considered after installation?

Germany's Industrial Safety Ordinance (BetrSichV) governs the safe use of work equipment, including installation, operation, maintenance, cleaning, inspection and modification. The operator's risk assessment, inspection requirements and safe-use responsibilities should therefore be coordinated with the machine supplier's product-conformity documentation.

Can a food dryer be designed around German food-hygiene and food-contact requirements?

Yes. Food applications can be engineered around cleanability, hygienic access, suitable product-contact materials and contamination control. EU food-hygiene and food-contact rules apply, including Regulation (EC) 852/2004 and Regulation (EC) 1935/2004. Germany also applies the Food and Feed Code (LFGB), including provisions relevant to food-contact materials.

Is there one universal Germany certification for a complete industrial dryer?

No. The conformity route is project-specific. A complete dryer may be affected by machinery, electrical, EMC, ATEX, pressure-equipment, gas, food-contact and other requirements depending on configuration and intended use. CE marking is not a separate quality certificate and does not replace the need to determine which legislation applies.

When is a notified body or external conformity-assessment body required?

Third-party involvement is required only where the applicable legislation and selected conformity-assessment procedure require it. Many machinery and electrical routes can be manufacturer-led, while certain pressure-equipment categories, ATEX products, gas appliances or higher-risk machinery categories can require notified-body involvement. The exact route must be determined from the final equipment classification.

What responsibilities apply when machinery is imported into Germany from outside the EEA?

The manufacturer remains responsible for meeting the applicable product requirements, while an importer established in the EEA has verification and traceability duties under the relevant legislation. Importer details, conformity documentation, instructions and the legal economic-operator roles should therefore be agreed before shipment.

Can GEM Drytech provide Germany/EU-market-compatible components and documentation?

Yes. Component selection, electrical architecture, PLC/HMI controls, motors, VFDs, safety devices, instrumentation, enclosure ratings, drawings, manuals, risk documentation, declarations and applicable conformity evidence can be specified during project engineering according to the final machine configuration and customer requirements.

What information should we share to receive a dryer recommendation?

Please share the material name and composition, feed rate, inlet moisture, required final moisture, operating hours, particle or sludge characteristics, temperature limits, available heating source, electrical supply, German plant location and intended use of the dried product.
