Northern Lights Food Processing, LLC
Project summary:
Completed dryer installation work, commissioning support, and operator training for Northern Lights Food Processing in the USA.
From dairy and whey to brewing, wine, grain, wood and biomass, pulp, pharmaceuticals, specialty chemicals, sludge, recycling, minerals and battery materials, GEM Drytech designs dryer systems around the material, evaporation load, product quality and Austrian plant conditions.
Austria combines high-value dairy and food processing, brewing and distilling, wine and fruit, a large forestry, timber and pulp sector, pharmaceuticals and specialty chemicals, and significant mineral, refractory and metallurgical industries. Moisture affects product quality, storage, transport cost, energy consumption and plant throughput.
Each system is sized around feed moisture, target moisture, evaporation load, product sensitivity, available heat, hygiene, dust control and emissions — together with the CE conformity route, ASchG and AM-VO duties and the site’s Betriebsanlagengenehmigung under the Gewerbeordnung 1994.
GEM Drytech Systems LLP engineers continuous industrial dryers — belt, apron, paddle, rotary, fluid-bed and related technologies — for Austrian process plants across 18 focus industries. Every project starts from the material: a Dried & Tested pilot trial establishes real drying behaviour before equipment is specified, and the design is built around Austrian utilities, EU conformity requirements and the plant’s permit position.
230 V / 400 V at 50 Hz, typically TN-S or TN-C-S, with TAEV technical connection conditions for the grid connection. Motor efficiency classes follow Regulation (EU) 2019/1781.
Natural gas, biomass, thermal oil, steam, electricity, heat pumps, recovered process heat and, on many Austrian sites, a district heating connection that changes the operating cost case.
CE marking, EU Declaration of Conformity, technical file and German-language instructions; harmonised standards EN ISO 12100, EN ISO 13849-1 and EN 60204-1 are commonly applied.
GewO 1994 plant permit, IG-L air quality duties, EG-K limits for boiler plant, AWG 2002 for waste-derived streams, and IED 2010/75/EU with BAT conclusions for larger installations.
Explore the Austria-specific products and by-products across all 18 focus industries. Final selection depends on moisture, capacity, heat source, hygiene requirements, combustible dust, emissions and downstream use.

For Austrian processors, final moisture can influence stability, flowability, purity, texture, storage, packaging, energy use and downstream processing. The dryer is selected around the product requirement rather than a fixed machine type.
Drying can stabilize wet co-products and process solids, reduce handling and transport burden and support recovery routes where the material, temperature limits and final-use requirements make thermal drying appropriate.
Focused on industries where moisture directly affects product quality, process stability, throughput, storage, purity, energy use, emissions, transport or the value of a wet process stream.

Process, engineering, safety, conformity, environmental, operational and procurement points typically established before selecting an industrial dryer for Austria.
We design around food and ingredients, dairy and whey, grain and milling, brewing, malting and distilling, wine and fruit, animal feed and pet food, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology, nutraceuticals and botanicals, specialty and fine chemicals, wood and biomass, pulp and paper, industrial and municipal sludge, recycling and circular materials, fertilizer, minerals and lime, ceramics and refractories, metals, and battery and advanced materials.
Yes. Dried & Tested trials use representative material to assess the moisture target, residence time, product behaviour and scale-up requirements before equipment is specified.
Machinery placed on the EU market currently falls under Directive 2006/42/EC, transposed in Austria by the Maschinen-Sicherheitsverordnung (MSV 2010). Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 applies from 20 January 2027 and will replace it. Harmonised standards commonly used include EN ISO 12100 for risk assessment, EN ISO 13849-1 for safety-related control functions and EN 60204-1 for the electrical equipment of machines. The actual scope must be confirmed for each machine.
Yes, where applicable EU harmonisation legislation covers the equipment. Depending on scope this can include the Machinery Directive, the Low Voltage Directive 2014/35/EU, the EMC Directive 2014/30/EU, ATEX 2014/34/EU and the Pressure Equipment Directive 2014/68/EU. The supply should include an EU Declaration of Conformity, a technical file and instructions in German.
The ArbeitnehmerInnenschutzgesetz (ASchG) sets the occupational safety framework, with the Arbeitsmittelverordnung (AM-VO) covering work equipment, including inspection and testing duties, and the Arbeitsstättenverordnung (AStV) covering the workplace. The employer carries out the Evaluierung (hazard assessment), and the Arbeitsinspektorat is the competent authority. Guarding, emergency-stop function, access control and operator instruction in German should be established for the actual installation.
Pressure equipment falls under Directive 2014/68/EU, transposed in Austria by the Druckgeräteverordnung. Steam boilers and associated combustion plant may also fall under Austrian boiler and emission rules such as the Emissionsschutzgesetz für Kesselanlagen (EG-K). Classification, conformity assessment, recurring inspection and operator qualification must be reviewed per scope — a dryer is not automatically a pressure vessel.
Industrial installations in Austria generally require a Betriebsanlagengenehmigung under the Gewerbeordnung 1994 (§ 74 ff.). Depending on the activity, air quality duties under the Immissionsschutzgesetz-Luft (IG-L), boiler plant emission limits under the EG-K, waste duties under the Abfallwirtschaftsgesetz 2002 (AWG), wastewater emission ordinances and the Industrial Emissions Directive 2010/75/EU with its BAT conclusions may apply. Larger projects may trigger an environmental impact assessment under the UVP-G 2000.
Food business operators are subject to Regulation (EC) 852/2004 on the hygiene of foodstuffs and, nationally, the Lebensmittelsicherheits- und Verbraucherschutzgesetz (LMSVG), with AGES supporting official control. Dryers should offer cleanable product-contact surfaces, drainable construction and contamination control. Hygienic design principles in EN 1672-2 and EHEDG guidance are commonly applied, and food-contact materials should comply with Regulation (EC) 1935/2004.
Pharmaceutical manufacturing in Austria follows EU GMP as set out in EudraLex Volume 4, with the Austrian Medicines and Medical Devices Agency (BASG/AGES Medizinmarktaufsicht) as competent authority. Drying equipment is typically specified around cleanability, material certification and traceability, contained handling where needed, and a qualification approach covering design, installation, operation and performance.
Yes. Dairy and whey streams are evaluated on solids content, heat sensitivity, stickiness and hygroscopic behaviour, target residual moisture, hygienic design and the cleaning regime required by the plant.
Yes, subject to material characteristics, particle size, actual evaporation duty, ignition and dust risk, final fuel use and the available heat source. Solid biofuel quality classes are defined in the EN ISO 17225 series, and pellet certification schemes reference those classes.
Yes. Sludge drying is evaluated on wet feed rate, dry solids content, dewatered cake behaviour, target dryness, odour, exhaust treatment and the permitted disposal or recovery pathway. In Austria, sewage sludge is largely routed to incineration or co-incineration, and the federal waste management plan sets out phosphorus recovery obligations for larger treatment plants, which influences the dryness target and the product form.
Austrian industrial supply is 230 V single-phase and 400 V three-phase at 50 Hz, typically TN-S or TN-C-S. Low-voltage installations follow ÖVE/ÖNORM E 8101, grid connection follows the TAEV technical connection conditions, and the electrical equipment of the machine follows EN 60204-1. Motors, panels, VFDs, PLC/HMI, protective devices, earthing and instrumentation are specified against project requirements and customer plant standards; motor efficiency classes follow Regulation (EU) 2019/1781.
Grain dust, wood dust, food powders, graphite and some chemical powders require a process-specific dust and ignition risk review. Equipment for explosive atmospheres falls under Directive 2014/34/EU (ATEX), and workplace duties follow Directive 1999/92/EC, implemented in Austria by the Verordnung explosionsfähige Atmosphären (VEXAT), which requires zone classification and an explosion protection document. EN 1127-1 covers basic concepts for explosion prevention. No single universal certification should be assumed to apply.
Yes. The best heating source depends on evaporation load, required process temperature, hygiene constraints, energy price, utility availability, emission limits and any site heat recovery or district heating connection. Low-temperature belt drying in particular can often use recovered or waste heat, which changes the operating cost case significantly.
